Bay Window Restoration with Single to Double-Glazing Upgrade
A traditional Portobello bay window with end-of-life single glazing and tired sashes — fully restored and upgraded to slimline double glazing while keeping its period character.
Condition on arrival
Sashes were rattling, lower rails and cills had areas of decayed timber, and stretched cords meant the windows were heavy to lift and prone to dropping. Draughts and winter condensation were a daily problem.
The work we carried out
Each sash was removed and stripped on the bench. Decayed timber on the rails, cills and box frame was spliced out and replaced; cords, weights and pulleys were renewed and rebalanced. Single-glazed panes were swapped for slimline double-glazed units, sized to preserve the original astragal proportions, and concealed Reddiseals® draught-proofing was routed in throughout. Inside and out, the bay was prepared and redecorated.
The outcome
The bay now slides smoothly with no rattle or drop, looks unchanged from the street, and is noticeably warmer and quieter inside — set up for decades more use.
